Deaf Connections ALN Project at the Glasgow Science Centre

We have taken part in a series of Workshops run by Workers' Education Assocation at Glasgow Science Centre, exploring many aspects of Climate Change. We have learned so much that we didn't know before and had a lot of fun as well!

 Where in the world......?

                                                      Look Fozya, no strings...!!!

Ubayd Sharif tells us more about his favourite bits of the course........

'Last month I went to Glasgow Science Centre. We were talking about food, body, energy and weather. I'm really interested about the Science Centre because I want to find out information about where our food comes from, how the body works, where our energy comes from and why our climate is changing.
My favourite topic was about food because the food comes from different countries in the world. Some food is not fresh because the food is made far away from here. I like fresh food because the food will have a nice taste and flavour. I learned if the food travels far, there will be more pollution.'

How much energy needed to turn the wheel?

Did you know that .......?
We are all looking forward to the final session in the series - a visit to Whitelee Windfarm!
Hope the weather is kind to us....

Body Works @ Glasgow Science Centre Visit

Glasgow Science Centre Visit

28th March 2013

New BodyWorks Exhibition

What a fabulous afternoon at the Glasgow Science Centre complete with transport, food, BSL interpreters and sunshine... and we discovered a lot more about how our body actually works.

We did not know what to expect!

BodyWorks!

Deaf Connections ALN Project was invited to the Grand Opening of the new BodyWorks Exhibition at the Glasgow Science Centre.
We learned a lot about how our body works.  We burned some energy on the giant hamster wheel, we performed a virtual autopsy, we danced at the DNA disco!

We learned that we have 100,000,000,000,000 (100 trillion) cells in our body.  We tried to make sense of our brains.  We tested our abilities and explored the secrets of our body.

So this is how my spine works!
Mind over Matter with
the Mind Ball!
Our thanks go to Sally Pritchard at the Glasgow Science Centre
for making this visit possible.  We will never look at our bodies
in the same way again!

Did we enjoy it?

Learning about 'Green Energy' at the Glasgow Science Centre

Learning all about energy!

ALN Glasgow Science Centre Visit 31 January 2013

We were all happy to arrive and escape the elements on a very wet and windy day!

We had a very interesting morning at the Science Centre, learning about types of renewable & non-renewable energy and thinking about how much energy we use in our own homes.  We discussed ways that we could save energy and become more “Green”.

After a lovely lunch, we went to see some of the exhibits including the Tower of Power!  We saw how much manual power was needed to power every day appliances. It was good fun with surprising results!

Tower of Power
We saw some more exhibits most of which were interactive and related to energy such as a mini tornado and a plasma ball.
Giant snails & cockroaches!

It was a fantastic day and we thank WEA and the Glasgow Science Centre and look forward to our next session!

Diary of a Healthy Bake and Learn Group

Healthy Bake and Learn – 1st February 2013

The final day of the Bake and Learn course!  It has been a wonderful course and we have learned loads.  Our teacher, Claire was not going to let us off lightly today.  We worked very hard and produced 4 different things!

First of all a rustic Irish Soda Bread

Then an oatie honey scone/cake followed by healthier scones using vegetable oil instead of butter

Lastly, in preparation for Shrove Tuesday, we made pancakes.

Mmmmm......... delicious!!

We all thoroughly enjoyed the course.  We had a lot of fun and learned about healthy eating and how we can adjust our diet and recipes to be more healthy, but sill have some of the things we enjoy!
