Diary of a Healthy Baking and Learning group

ALN Healthy Baking and Learning Sessions    18th January 2013

Session 2 started with a discussion around the ‘Eat Well Plate’.  We looked at different food groups, what they mean and how to have a balanced daily diet.  The food diary was introduced and everyone was asked to record what they eat each day and next week we will think about how it fits into the ‘Eat Well Plate’.

We then made two cakes – one not so healthy which was a Victoria sponge and then a healthier option which was yoghurt based.

We saw how both cakes are similar and both very tasty although one contained more fat and sugar!!

Today was the first day and the Group learned  how to make a delicious healthy Banana cake and  Apple Crumble.

The smells coming from the kitchen were fantastic!

They learned that it is possible to make tasty cakes using healthier ingredients such as low fat spread and semi skimmed milk.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this first session.

ALN Healthy Cooking and Learning Sessions    16th January 2013

A bit of a strange start to the day!  We had a visit from the Strathclyde Fire Service as the Fire Alarm was set off, but amazingly, we managed to catch up and complete everything we had planned to do.

The group made a healthy lentil soup then a delicious Thai style salmon dish which also included a lot of healthy vegetables.

Once all the cooking and clearing up was finished, we sat down to learn about the ‘Eat Well Plate’ and discussed a typical daily diet and what it should contain.  Everyone was given a Food Diary and asked to complete it on a daily basis to compare their own diet with the ‘Eat Well Plate’ and for discussion next session.
